Tips on Picking the Right Humidifier

Evaporative:

Ultrasonic units use sound vibrations to add moisture to the air. The draw back of this type of humidifier is that it leaves a white dust on every surface in your home. The white dust is minerals naturally occurring in your water. It is a real pain to clean up. If you want to prevent the dust you can buy distilled water which is inconvenient and expensive. I do not recommend this type of unit.

This is the type I prefer. Several gallons of water are stored in a tank in the unit. Water is pumped through a wicking material (should be anti-bacterial coated) and a fan quietly blows through the wet wicking material evaporating the water and adding humidity to the air. This type uses the least amount of electricity and provides 1-2 days before needing a tank refill. Larger console units of this type can allow you to go more days between refills. There is also a UV light option on some units that kills airborne viruses or bacteria that pass through.

Cool Mist(impeller):

Heater type units literally boil water into steam. They cost the most to run. No white dust is left behind because steam is pure water. A build-up of minerals are left behind on the heating element. These minerals can cause popping noises and inefficient operation. Removing the mineral deposits can be done by soaking the heater part in white vinegar weekly.

Overall the best type for long-term use is the evaporative wicking type. They cost the least to operate and do not leave white mineral dust everywhere, and only need attention every few days for water refills.

Steam:

So, what kind of humidifier are you going to buy? There are several things you need to know first before purchasing a unit. How much space are you adding moisture to? If you want to do your whole house and have hot air heat, I recommend having a whole house humidifier installed by a heating contractor. This type will connect to your water line and automatically add moisture to the heated air within your furnace.

During the winter heating months in colder climates your home will need extra moisture. A humidifier replaces moisture that is lost from heating your home. The proper humidity is essential for your maximum comfort. Not enough humidity can cause itchy dry skin, stuffy noses, static build up, frizzy hair and a chilly feeling. The proper humidity is a personal thing. It is best to start around 60% and adjust up or down until you find the best comfort level for your needs.

This is the type I remember my mom putting in my room when I had a cold. They are the least expensive units. They work by spinning the water into tiny droplets and blowing them into the air. For a few days use they are ok. Excess water can build up around the unit from unevaporated droplets so do not place it on wooden furniture.
I remember having to change a few wet socks from this extra water on the floor.

If you only need to moisturize a few rooms or you do not have hot air heat, then a stand alone unit is required. There are 4 types available: evaporative, ultrasonic, steam, and cool mist. Here is what each type is good for.

Cough Remedies – Natural Home Remedies For Coughs

Many parents believe in the healing properties of orange juice, but grapes are perhaps one of the most effective, old fashioned cough remedy. Adults can enjoy eating the fruit and help to reduce their coughing spells at the same time. If eating the fruit whole is not an option, you might try dissolving some honey in grape juice to make syrup that will be easier to swallow. A sauce prepared from pureed raisins is another handy way to use grapes as a cough remedy.

Old fashioned, natural home remedies just might be the best way to reduce the number of coughing spells without eliminating them altogether. You might ask why we would not want to wipe them out altogether. The answer would be that as irritating as a hacking cough can be, it is a necessary reflex that helps to keep our airways clear of obstruction.

For serious illness, modern medicine is hard to beat. We are lucky that we have much better means to deal with chronic coughs and serious illnesses like whooping cough and flu. However, you may find that natural home remedies offer enough comfort and relief for minor coughs and colds that you have no need for commercial preparations. And of course we want to remind you to always consult your physician on matters concerning your health and that of your child as well as before administering any natural home remedies.

Cough Remedies – Natural Home Remedies For Coughs

For most children, the worst part of a cold is the coughing that prevents them from getting much needed rest. With the recent concerns over the safety of kid’s cough medicines, old home remedies may be worth a try. The good news is that most of the ingredients for old home remedies may be right there in your kitchen cupboard. If you see a home remedy listed here that you would like to try, ask your pediatrician or family physician what he thinks about it. If he tells you that he believes it won’t hurt; give it a whirl. You may be amazed at how much these simple practices can help to give your child or yourself some relief.

One essential item that is neglected far too often is plain water. It has mucous thinning properties when drunk, gargled with a little salt or when used in a humidifier. The old school mentality was that the more water that a patient drank the quicker the virus was washed out of the body.

When the upper respiratory tract becomes inflamed due to an infection, the act of coughing ensues with the trigger being a buildup of phlegm in the trachea. The symptoms of the common cold are rarely cause for alarm even though when we hear the first cough, our thoughts immediately run to the possibility of an impending illness. In most cases all that is called for is the treatment of the symptoms and keeping our patient as comfortable as possible for the week or so that it takes to clear the virus out of our system. This situation is where natural home remedies really shine.

Before we make suggestions on how to whip up a batch of old fashioned remedies to eliminate that cough, we should cover what items that should be eliminated that might be contributing to the problem. For the duration of the cold or when symptoms are present all dairy products, meat and fried foods should be avoided as they tend to increase mucous production which in turn triggers the cough reflex. No natural home remedy will help if the diet is working against it.

Many old timers recommend home remedies based on the curative properties of honey alone. Honey can be effective and safe for many, but some add other ingredients to the honey to get even better results. Some advise the combination of a teaspoon of honey with turmeric powder for a dry cough and others have said that equal parts of glycerin, honey and lemon juice do the trick with the recommended dosage of a single teaspoon before going to bed. Another old fashion trick involves juicing an onion and then mixing the juice with honey for an excellent although pungent cough remedy.

Mobility Chairs

Manual Wheelchairs
The most common type of manual wheelchair is designed for heavy use with strong steel construction and large rear wheels so it can be self-propelled. This standard model usually weighs more than 30 pounds and can support up to 250 pounds. Seat widths range from 16 inches to 22 inches.

As you evaluate each option based on your needs, be sure to consider each chair’s power, speed capacity, size, ease of steering, seating comfort, transport capability, and battery life.

Mobility Chairs

Heavy-duty models are available for those who weigh in excess of 250 pounds and need a seat up to 30 inches wide. There is also a lighter version of the standard mode that is more portable but not as durable for extended use.

You can purchase models that recline as well as those for shower and bathroom use.

Scooters are battery-powered like electric wheelchairs and should be evaluated on similar characteristics including speed, maneuverability, steering, seating comfort, transport capability, etc.

Other specialty mobility chairs include those designed for children, teens, all-terrain purposes, beach use, and wheelchair sports activities.

The following information is designed to provide an overview of your choices and help serve as a starting point in your decision-making process. Before making a wheelchair or scooter purchase, always consult with your health care provider to ensure you are making the best possible choice.

- Mid-wheel drive chairs are excellent for indoor maneuverability. The small models are good for use in apartments and nursing homes, while larger models do well in both indoors and outside.

Mobility chairs fall into three primary categories: (1) Manual, push wheelchairs, (2) Powered or electric wheelchairs, and (3) Motorized scooters. Following is a summary of each type.

While they are significantly heavier than manual mobility chairs, electric models are helpful to those with limited upper body strength and who can’t use self-propelled chairs.

These models are designed with small rear wheels and cannot be self-propelled so an individual must rely on a companion (hence the name) to push him or her.

- Rear-wheel drive power wheelchairs are not as maneuverable as the mid-wheel drive electric wheelchair, but are stable and well suited for active all around use. These models have the highest speeds available and the largest turning radius.

With the wide variety of mobility chairs on the market today, you have more choice and options than ever before. As you begin shopping for a wheelchair or scooter, consider your specific mobility requirements, size and how you plan to use your chair.

Then, evaluate and “test drive” a number of models and compare the level of comfort, function and features that the different mobility chairs offer.

Companion or transport wheelchairs are another manual option to consider. They are easily carried, folded and stored in vehicles for frequent outings. They weigh much less (around 15 to 20 pounds) and still have the ability to carry around 250 pounds of weight.

- Front-wheel drive models offer good indoor maneuverability but tend to fishtail at higher speeds. The overall turning radius is about 25 to 28 inches, depending on the manufacturer. Large wheels are mounted in front of the seating, which allows the chair to go over tougher terrain.

Powered Wheelchairs
Similar to manual wheelchair models, there are a wide variety of battery-powered models available for both indoor and outdoor use.

Mid-wheel drive wheelchairs normally have six wheels, two larger (powered) wheels affixed to the base and 4 smaller wheels surrounding them.

Electric wheelchairs are easy to operate and provide independence from relying on a companion to push the chair. Models come in front, mid and rear wheel drive.

Models have three or four wheels and typically feature front and rear lights, padded swivel seating, a host of accessories.

Motorized Scooters
Scooters offer those with some degree of mobility the opportunity to cross rougher terrain and travel longer distances in stores, parks and neighborhoods.

Things To Consider When Buying A Curved Stair Lift

Things To Consider When Buying A Curved Stair Lift

Curved stair lifts usually require more servicing than any straight stair lift. Additional stress is caused by the chair having to move along the track around corners. You may find that the ongoing maintenance costs will be higher than those for a straight one.

Not all manufacturers make curved stair lifts. The companies that do are market leaders who make stair lifts of excellent quality. You’ll pay for this excellence though. Companies that do make curved stair lifts include Stannah Stair Lifts (the Stannah 260 stair lift) and Bruno Stair Lifts (Electra-Ride III Custom Curved Rail Stairlift).

Should you decide at a later date to replace or get rid of your lift and want to sell it, you may find this difficult. Because it is custom made, the stairlift made for your home isn’t going to fit someone else’s. At best you probably will only be able to sell the chair, motor and controls; the track, which constitutes the majority of cost, will be useless to someone else.

Finally, before buying, discuss warranties and after sales service with the retailer. As mentioned these lifts do require maintenance and you’ll need to budget costs for this.

A curved stair lift is your only option if your stairs have a curve, intermediate landing or have some sort of obstruction. If you are going to buy one you need to be aware of some of the issues with price, length of installation, operating costs and more.

Don’t let the above stop you from buying a curved stair lift. The benefits of installing one lift can’t be understated but you should be aware of the issues before you buy one so you can discuss them with your dealer.

Buying a used curved stair lift is really to be avoided unless you buy one from a reputable dealer who will install it for you. Make sure the track being provided is new and not re-conditioned track. This is not considered to be safe and a reconditioned track will not conform to International Safety Standards.

Installing a stair chair lift can greatly improve quality of life. Even if you’re not technically disabled, walking up and down stairs can be demanding, frustrating or downright intimidating. Mobility and access to all areas of a home can greatly restore a person’s independence and peace of mind.

If you are considering the installation a curved stair lift you should be aware of a few things before you buy.
